Tens of thousands of Australian children, aged between 5 and 15, are wetting the bed at night. On bed wetting websites, where some kids who took until they were 13 or 15 to stop, gave advice and this was to just wait – it will happen. Bedwetting is something children can’t help, and they almost always grow out of it. It is important teachers are aware of this being an issue. Five simple tips:
1. the bed wetting alarm – is the most popular way of getting children dry (80% chance of working)
2. healthy bladder – drinking 1.5 litres of water during the day and holding urine
3. pelvic floor muscles – to strengthen urine holding
4. strong determination – tell yourself and positive reinforcement
5. nothing and wait – most kids stop at 15 if not before (1 in 20 wet the bed from 8 years)
Percentage of children who wet the bed at different ages
In 2010, The Royal Children’s Hospital Melbourne, stated that in Victoria alone, there were at least 37,000 children between the ages of five and 15 who regularly wet the bed.
What people on the bed wetting forums are saying:
* I found that letting my children sleep in pull ups only delayed their toilet training. I think it’s better for them to feel the wetness against their skin and get up and get changed. It’s a hard slog for all of us, but eventually they get there.
* No liquids 2-4 hrs before bedtime. provide a stress free enviornment for the child, cranberry juice, easy on the processed sugar, more bananas.
