Puppy in my bed by third night
We have just adopted a 8-week old King Charles Spaniel. She is smart, cute, funny and active. Her name is Choco. My plan was not to have her in my bed. And when I told my daughter on the phone tonight, (8-years) where Choco slept last night, she said: “Mum she will want to do that every night now!”
Night 1. tried to put puppy to sleep in the second bathroom at about 10pm. I let puppy cry for 45 mins and then I put her a in washing basket beside my bed. Puppy woke at 2am and 5am so I let her outside to go to the toilet. I then patted puppy back to sleep in the basket. It took about 2 minutes the first time and about 5 minutes the second time. Puppy woke about 6am.Toilet training is going well. Puppy prefers to go outside rather than the puppy pads. As soon as puppy wakes I take her outside.
Night 2. Puppy fell asleep in my ensuite bathroom floor about 10.30pm (while I was showering) just before I was going to bed. She woke bout 12am and I put her out for the toilet. Choco then wouldn’t settle in the basket so I put her in the bathroom for a minute and then the basket worked! She woke me again at 5am for the toilet and I could not settle her again so we slept together on the lounge until 9am!
Night 3. I let puppy sleep on a towel on my bed. She couldn’t jump on my bed, but for the past two nights she did try. She started to play and I put her on the floor twice until she got the message that it was sleep time. Choco obviously quickly forgot how privileged she was! She avoided the towel. We went to bed at 11pm and she woke once for the toilet and then not until 9am. She snuggled very close the whole night.
Why I caved. My sleep was suffering and I decided the only way I was going to get quality sleep was to give-in! I was purposely going to bed earlier due to the disrupted sleep. Now I have Choco in my bed I am in more control – well sort of!!

Just like a baby. I agree, do whatever gets everyone the most sleep and send him to puppy school When he’s more settled. Meanwhile, enjoy the bonding time with your loyal new friend!

Haha – reminds me of how I caved in with our Golden Retriever. When we got Oscar I was so adament that he would not be an inside dog, let alone sleep on the bed! But yeah I compromised my principles in the interests of a good nights sleep. I managed to ween him off it after a week or two but dogs dont seem to be the best of sleepers – he used to breath rapidly and loudly and seemed to be having nightmares – he would kick and let out occasional little yelps!
Really looking forward to reading about how you eventually get Choco out of your bed – or not! 🙂
