Winter in Queensland, Australia, is unique because when we say it is freezing, we really mean it’s just not hot!!! The more people get used to not having something, the harder they find to adjust to it. The weather being cold here is a strange phenomenon so when it is slightly cold, it is the topic on everyone’s mind!
Here are three ways to cope in Queensland’s winter:
1. Blow dry your hair every morning because it is a hand-held heater!
2. Get dry in the shower, after the water has been turned off!
3. Close the windows before bed to avoid the icy winds!
We only need three ways because it is really not cold. However, we also don’t have central heating, which all of the cold places have, so this can be hard for overseas visitors!
In July 12, 2014 it was the coldest day in Brisbane since July 28, 1911. The temperature got down to a brisk 2.6C at 6.41am, which was cold, since the average temperature was normally 12C.
The world’s coldest temperature ever recorded was minus 128.6 degrees F in at the Russian research station in Vostok, Antarctica, on July 21, 1983.
Truly cold weather is below 32 °F (0 °C). Anything warmer can be handled in summer clothes as long as you slowly, but thoroughly train your body to do so. Apparently being cold can be controlled if you think the right way and get out in it and enjoy it, like skiing or snowboarding.
“I think you do get used to it when it’s perpetually low,” said the University of Illinois at Chicago professor, who specializes in climate and environmental issues and works frequently in the Arctic and Antarctic.
This is why Queensland is spoilt because it is often hot and not cold, so we get used to the hot and not the cold!
