In the early hours of yesterday morning (London time) a fire ripped through a 27-storey west London residential tower and the death toll is rising.
London Fire Brigade was called to the 27-storey apartment block just after 1.15am. Police have confirmed 6 fatalities and 74 residents in hospital, out of a total 130 flats.
The fire, one of the biggest fires seen in London in recent years, took more than 40 fire engines and 200 firefighters, who fought for hours to control the blaze.
Australian man, Jody Martin, who lives nearby, was one of the first on the scene and described the blaze as an “inferno”.
“I went up a set of stairs and went in through the window of somebody’s apartment… just shouting for anyone,” Mr Martin told 9NEWS.
A man who lived on the seventh floor said:
“There were very quiet alarms. I was in bed, on the verge of falling asleep and I smelt plastic. I went to the kitchen to smoke a cigarette, opened the window and heard a woman say, ‘it’s getting bigger and bigger’,” the man told Sky News.
This incident comes just 11 days after the horrific London stabbing which left 8 people dead. Australians Kirsty Boden, 28 and Sara Zelenak, 21 were among the eight people killed on June 3. Three attackers ploughed into pedestrians with a white van before stabbing revellers in Borough Market, a popular night area.
