Hypnagogic hallucinations are dreamlike visions that happen when a person hears or sees things when he or she’s about to go to sleep. Usually, these dreams are somewhat frightening that a person wakes up with a sudden jerk. These hallucinations also usually occur at the state of sleepiness as well as waking. They are somewhat vivid and are not really clear to a person.
What are the causes?
Hypnagogic hallucinations takes place when a person is about to fall asleep. There is also another condition where a person suffers from hallucinations when waking up and this is called hypnopompic hallucinations.
These hallucinations can happen to anyone and may require medical attention. There are so many reasons for this to take place. An irregular sleeping schedule or lack of sleep can be one of the causes of hypnagogic hallucinations. This cause can prompt certain neurons in the person’s nervous system to produce illusions in one’s mind. Drugs or drug overdose can also trigger hypnagogic hallucinations. If the person took a certain substance and that is already further than the tolerable toxicity level, it affects his or mind and this causes the hallucinations to take place.
What are the symptoms?
Hypnagogic hallucinations can sometimes be a frightening experience to those who frequently suffer from it. The person’s semi-conscious state tricks his or her mind to believe that what he or she hear, feel and see is real. The most sensation that people experience is the feeling of falling down. A lot of people have at some point experienced this sensation as a sudden jerk that happens when they are about to doze off.
For some people, the sensation that there’s something or somebody else in their room can be quite troubling. There are also identified cases where the sufferer sees spiders, shadows and other interlopers in the room.
If you are having these hallucinations, you may have also associated it with sleep apnea. What causes sleep apnea? Some of the possible causes of this condition include obesity, increasing age and inheriting it from a family member who have this sleeping disorder.
It is a serious problem that needs medical attention to avoid possible risks on the sufferer’s health. You may have also thought about night terrors when you’re having these hallucinations.
What are night terrors?
During this condition, the sufferer can have trouble waking up. Children and adults who often experience night terrors cannot recall them. Night terrors are different from nightmares as the latter are remembered while the former are not. Terrors are also associated with racing heart and labored breathing while nightmares are not.
The fear that the sufferer experience when having hypnagogic hallucinations can be quite difficult to deal with. However, it is important to keep in mind that these hallucinations are not an indication of any psychological problem. It is also not uncommon to experience hallucinations at some stage in your life.
