Golinski tackles WACape2Cape
Matt Golinski, briefly spoke tonight on Channel 7’s Today Tonight, since the Boxing Day fire in 2011, at his home on the Sunshine Coast, Qld, which killed his wife and 3 daughters.
Celebrity chef, Matt, is waiting on surgery and writing a cook book, but that is not all he is doing. He runs marathons with other burns victims.
When asked how he was doing he said the nation’s support has helped and he just lives day by day and runs to keep his head clear.
When tragedies hit people there is no telling how people will cope. People say: “I just couldn’t cope with that”, but for different reasons people can. What I try and teach my daughter is there is always hope and the fact that we have choices and we must make good ones in times of crisis and need.
People like Matt inspire us. The worst thing one can do when one has had a tragedy happen is nothing and sleep and take sedatives of any type. Depending on the tragedy the body and mind might need the rest at first. However, as soon as the person is able bodied, they need to power forward. To keep your head up is hard to do alone so we need the support of friends and family and the community. In Australia, we are a lucky Country – there is so much support out there.
Burns survivor, Grazi Lisciotto, Golinski and Bali bombing survivor, Peter Hughes, raised money and awareness for the Peter Hughes Burn Foundation by running the Cape2Cape Marathon last month. The three men tackled the rugged course in Western Australia’s Margaret River region as a relay over three days (start date: March 28). The run started at Cape Leeuwin (Augusta) and finished 137klm away in Cape Naturaliste (Dunsborough).
The Peter Hughes BURN Foundation (PHBF) is a not-for-profit registered charity that exists to meet the needs of BURN Survivors and their families in times of trauma. When a BURN Survivor receives a BURN injury, it can go far beyond skin deep. They may experience issues with lowered self esteem, impact on body image, career retraining, all of which can contribute to isolation from society and become prisoners in their own home.
Your Donation will help the PHBF with:
• Running Retreats for Burns Survivors & their carers
• Providing Resource packs in hospitals across Australia
• Provide Counselling & Support services for PHBF members & supporters
• Assist Burn survivors with engaging in community activities
