Yesterday, apprentice jockey, Caitlin Forrest, suffered horrific injuries, which led to her death, when her mount Colla Voce fell, and she was hit by a pack of horses.
Forrest, 19, who brought down three other horses during her fall, at a Murray Bridge Gold Cup near Adelaide, was reportedly semi-conscious and responsive when airlifted to the Royal Adelaide Hospital.
Forrest’s partner, Scott Westover, said she was a very good young jockey, who had it all in front of her, and it was tough now that she was gone.
Her death was the second fatal fall this week after another Australian jockey, Queensland-based Carly-Mae Pye, lost her life in a barrier trial at Callaghan Park.
Forrest’s death has sparked calls for a thorough review of Australian racing, which has now lost a total of four female jockeys in 14 months.
Simone Montgomerie died after falling on Darwin Cup day in August last year while mother-of-two Desiree Gill died after tumbling from a mount on the Sunshine Coast in November.
This devastating news comes just weeks before Australia’s race that stops the nation – The Melbourne Cup. May we remember these amazing women.
Collo Voce was also put down.
