Many Australians will wake to find we have a new prime minister – a sudden surprise to us all.
Malcolm Turnbull will become Australia’s 29th prime minister. He ousted Tony Abbott in a party room ballot in Canberra tonight. Australia has now had five prime ministers in five years.
The meeting was called after Mr Turnbull approached Mr Abbott after question time today to request a leadership ballot. Julie Bishop was re-elected as deputy Liberal leader.
Mr Abbott served as prime minister for almost two years, the 10-th shortest of any Australian prime minister. He lost the leadership just four days before his second anniversary in office.
